Medivan Policies & Procedures | Vineyard Transit Authority

The Medivan is medical transportation to Boston provided to senior and disabled persons. To be eligible you must be 60 years of age or older and/or disabled. If you are under 60 with a disability you would need to provide documentation from your Health Care Provider. Persons who do not qualify under these criteria may qualify for standby status and can call the VTA the day before to find out if space is available.

The Medivan travels to and from Boston area hospitals every Tuesday on a year round basis, excluding holidays. You can meet the van by 6:15AM at the Vineyard Haven Park & Ride lot on State Rd., or directly at the Steamship Authority no later than 6:30AM for the 7:00AM boat.

All scheduled appointments in Boston must be made between the hours of 10:00AM and 1:00PM, as the Medivan departs Boston by 2:30PM. Passengers must be prepared to leave by 2:00PM. The van returns on the 5:00PM ferry. If you are delayed for any reason, the van cannot wait. It will be your responsibility to seek alternate transportation back to Woods Hole.

All passengers must schedule their trips in advance by calling the VTA at 508-693-9440 ext. 1, preferably no later than 1:00PM the day before travel. To improve your chances of securing a seat, we strongly suggest calling as soon as you have your appointment. Reservations are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Once reservations are booked you must call us the day before travel to re-confirm. There must be a minimum of four (4) reservations for the van to go. If the minimum is not met, you will be notified the prior Friday.

There is a $40.00 round trip fee (includes ferry ticket) for this service, cash or check payable to the VTA will be collected by the driver upon boarding the van. This fee is for ALL seats booked per person, including escorts & personal care attendants. The VTA will charge $20.00 for a one way reservation if made in advance. There will NOT be any refunds issued for any part of your reservation that is missed. If you are unsure whether you will be done in time or may be staying, please pay the driver $20.00 each way.
